As a mother I provide wholesome meals for my children, but I often fail at teaching my children about why it's important to eat right, and how to do it for themselves. Take 20 minutes today to watch this video. It's a real kick in the pants that every American family needs.

Jazz Up Lunchtime

I get so bored with lunch. Around here it's the same-old, same-old, all the time. The last edition of the Hillbilly Housewife newsletter promised ideas for school lunches, so I checked it out. If it's good to pack for school lunch, then it's good at home, too. I have to admit there were some pretty strange things on the list (baloney and pineapple ring sandwich?), but I did get some ides to jazz up the midday meal. How about some lime jell-o with shredded carrots? Cottage cheese and canned fruit? How about prunes cooked in orange juice (yuck!)? Well, two out three isn't bad.

Ingredient Substitutes

I would like to turn you on to an Internet resource that I use quite a bit. As a cost conscience cook I don't like buying a bottle of some unusual vinegar, or spice that I will likely use once or twice before it goes bad. There is a very good chance that there is a good substitute for that unusual ingredient, but I'll be darned if I know what it is. In comes the Cook's Thesaurus. This very helpful website not only gives you the definition of your strange ingredient, but tells you what you can substitute for it. I used it today to make certain that I could substitute Jarlsberg for the Gruyere I could not find at my grocery store.
