Fudge Cocoa Cookies

When it comes to cookies, I'm not nearly the snob that I am when it comes to cake. There is just nothing like homemade cake, no matter what bakery you buy from. But, cookies? I can eat store-bought cookies, no problem. One of my favorites is Archway Dutch Cocoa cookies. Mmmmm. But, if I came home with a package of them, I'd be lucky to get one. Quantity -- or lack thereof -- is an issue in my house. My kids eat cookies quickly, so if you snooze, you lose.

Recently I modified a recipe that I had, creating these yummy chocolate treats, and they are pretty darn close to the Archways Dutch Cocoa cookies, probably better. They are just slightly crisp on the outside, but chewy/soft on the inside. I roll them in granulated sugar, because that's what Archway does (or did -- I haven't bought them in a few years), and I like to make them small, so they are just two or three bites, but that's a personal thing.



Fudge Cocoa Cookies

1 cup butter, softened
2 cups sugar, plus sugar for rolling
2 eggs
1 t. vanilla
¾ cup cocoa
2 cups flour
1 t. baking soda
½ t. salt



Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In bowl of mixer, cream butter and 2 cups sugar.
Add eggs and vanilla.
Blend until batter is soft and fluffy.
Add cocoa, flour, baking soda and salt.



Stir the dough until it is thick and well formed.


Roll a teaspoonful into a small ball and roll in granulated sugar.
Place two inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8 minutes.*
Cool for one minute before removing to a rack.
If your kitchen is warm, store the dough in the refrigerator between batches.


*For larger balls bake for 10 minutes.

I did make these this morning. But mine didn't turn out so great. Sigh. For one thing I had to use magarine instead of butter (maybe that's why they're so flat?). Also I had a very scant, scant 3/4c of cocoa so that's probably why my dough was a bit too sticky to work with - even after I refrigerated it!

But chocolate is chocolate and I sure am craving a lot of that these days...

Anne, Mine are pretty flat, too. That's the way I like them. If yours got too flat, it could have been the fat to dry ratio (since you were short on cocoa). If you ever run into that again (just a little short on cocoa) you could put flour in for the rest of the cocoa.

YUMMY!!!! My kids thought these were great and I like them a lot too. I got about 60 cookies out of the batch.
I do want to say that if you line your baking sheet with a silicone liner, you need to increase the baking time by a minute or 2. Or your cookies will be extra fudgy. Wait, maybe that's not a problem after all!

Well, maybe my time was short. I did make them smallish though. But my pans are dark so they may have cooked quickly.

I made these today and they are fantastic, you are right, better than Archway. I used butter and real vanilla ! Sooooo good. My kids can't wait for me to get to their house for Christmas and bring them.

I just mixed up a double batch of this dough. I have to bring cookies to a church event tomorrow--and these are so good that I decided to fill our cookie jar as well :) Maybe I'll even freeze some for Christmas!

These have become my 'go-to' chocolate cookies!

And for a Christmas cookie instead of rolling them in sugar I tried rolling some in crushed candy canes - they came out great! Perfect to give all of my daughter's teachers for Christmas:)

Thanks so much. I was craving archway dutch cocoa and couldn't find them anywhere. They came out a little flat so I may try more flour next time? My husband used 1/2 brown sugar and melted the butter so maybe that was the reason. Still soooo good. They will be my go to cookie, well that and pizzelles which I love to make. Thanks so much for sharing! Oh and the candy cane sounds yummy! Glad to find your blog too. As I am a Catholic mom of two and hoping to make it four:)

The melted butter was probably the problem, Nicola, although these aren't a puffy cookie, as neither are archway's. I'm glad you liked them. Thanks for stopping to say "hi."

Made these today & they are YUMMY! They smell like a cup of hot chocolate & taste even better! I've never had the archway version but these are perfect!
