Thanks for Thanksgiving

Like so many Americans, Thanksgiving is one of our favorite family holidays. The other day, my oldest son told me that when he woke up in the morning he thought it was Thanksgiving. He was so excited, until he realized he was still dreaming.

In my opinion, Thanksgiving has the best attributes of the holidays and none of the worst. Spending time with family, enjoying good food, time off school and work, and relaxing. No shopping and spending, no commercialism, no disappointment. And no build-up. I mean, come on -- I'm already listening to Christmas jingles.

This year (since I didn't have a food blog in previous Thanksgivings), I thought I'd post our menu and then a recipe each day. If you're cooking for the first time, I guarantee my recipes -- they're tried and true. We usually serve dinner for 18 or so, but this year, due to family illness, they'll be around 13. I prepare most of the meal, but my mom usually brings her stuffing for those who count on "mom's stuffing." And she also brings pumpkin and pecan pie.

Thanksgiving at our house is nothing fussy. There are no five course meals. We serve everything at once (except maybe a little appetizer), buffet style. The kids go first and the noise level is high. We usually have three tables where candles are lit and everyone has a place reserved with a treat for later. The wine is poured and the music plays. It's great fun. The best ever.

My husband thinks it's too much work. He keeps trying to get me to go someplace else. But, no way. I wait for this fun all year.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday for all the reasons you list. And we do all the food at once, kids first, buffet style, too!

I'm sure your cake was just beautiful. I don't think fountains are cheesy at all. Weddings are always a mix of trend and classics - which is just what you had!

Very similar to ours, Barbara!

I am like you, I'll do it all if I have to, no short-cuts, no take-out. Last year my husband and I decided not to travel up to our parents' 3 hours away. His parents invited themselves here and offered to buy TG dinner at Luby's. I was shocked. Isn't that sac-religious? I did it all with a 2 yr old and an 8 month old: turkey, potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, rolls, pies, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and more. I can't imagine TG any other way!
