Sweet Rice

.

This is not a recipe. No more than a bowl of oatmeal is a recipe. It's my comfort food. I've been eating sweet rice for breakfast since I was a wee lass. My mother liked neither cream of wheat nor oatmeal, so she prepared white rice with milk, sugar, and cinnamon. And now whenever I make white rice for supper, I always make extra for breakfast. Mmmm. Paired with a piece of cinnamon toast and a cup of tea, it's my ultimate comfort food. My kids feel the same way.

Sounds yummy. Could you tell us how to make it? Is it like a rice pudding?

Charlotte,
It's as simple as pouring a little milk on some white rice, heating it up and topping it with sugar and cinnamon -- nothing complicated or time-consuming. If you have leftover rice, heat it up in the micro or a saucepan with the milk. If you're making fresh rice (I often just use Minute Rice in the morning) just add warm milk, sugar and cinnamon as you would oatmeal.

Oh Barb this reminds me so much of my childhood in the Philippines. We used condesed milk on leftover rice. My mom used to fondly call it the "poverty food" lol. That's because we normally make it when the pantry is empty and we're waiting for the next paycheck. Cinnamon was a luxury then but now that it's readily available to me I'll be trying it.

My mom grew up during the depression, and this was one of the things they used to eat! She always liked this and would make it for us as children as a special treat. It has been 25 years since I have had this, and I had forgotten about it! I will make it for my children and tell them about their Grandma. Thank you!

Mmmm...sounds wonderful! When I was a kid we would have this for Sunday supper on occasion, with a few raisins as well, maybe a pat of butter. Nice blog!

When I was a child we had an exchange student from Mexico living with us and he would make this for breakfast. I remember eating it and enjoying it. I have often thought of this dish since then whenever I see leftover rice in my fridge and have eaten it a few times since those days.
