Back to my roots

By now you've probably figured out that I'm a comfort girl. Nothing fancy here. Just old-fashioned food. Since the weather has taken a turn for the cool, the kids and I have been enjoying one of my favorite comfort snacks in the afternoon -- Cinnamon Toast. Now, this is not pop the bread in the toaster, butter and sprinkle it with cinnamon sugar Cinnamon Toast. This requires lighting the oven. But, that doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. Au contraire -- that makes it more worthwhile in my book. Any treat that you have to wait for, is worth waiting for. If you've never had Cinnamon Toast made this way, you really should try it.

The hot cocoa that goes with, is optional and can be replaced with your favorite cup of coffee or hot tea. The cocoa is good though, made from scratch, and the kids enjoy it. It's the recipe on the Hershey's Cocoa Tin. I cannot think of an afternoon snack that I would enjoy more. It takes me right back to my roots.

Cinnamon Toast

2 slices white bread per person
(I highly recommend cheap white sandwich bread)
softened butter
1 T. sugar per person
cinnamon to taste

Preheat oven to 400 degree F.
Place bread slices on cookie sheet.
Spread generously with butter.
Sprinkle about 1/2 T. sugar on each slice -- evenly.
Sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 to 10 minutes,
or until toast is golden brown on the bottom.

Oh yum! That brings me back to my childhood. Had never heard of cinnamon toast until we got some American neighbours back in Dublin and they made it and my brother and I were amazed! He still has cinnamon toast crunch sent to him from friends in the states! I've never actually made it, but I will definitely try this, as I know the girls would love it! You're making me pine for Fall in the mid-west! ;-)

I haven't made myself cinnamon toast in ages, I use to love this. I really should start making this again, it's so simple yet so good.
